About Alexander Murray, Viscount Fincastle, Eighth Earl of Dunmore
Alexander Murray worked as a correspondent for The Times whilst he served as a Lieutenant for the 16th Lancers in India. He became the only journalist to receive the Victoria Cross in 1897, when he and two other officers attempted to save Lieutenant R.T. Greaves from heavy fire, taking a bullet himself, in the process.
Murray then fought in the Second Boer War in South Africa and in 1906, he received a Royal Victorian Order for services to the Prince of Wales. In 1907, Murray’s father died and he became the eighth earl of Dunmore. He resigned his commission to look after the families considerable estates and it was at this time he took residence at 55 Lancaster Gate.
Dating back to the 19th Century, the grade II Listed building features a white stucco-fronted façade with English baroque details and French touches. Regarded as one of the most prestigious addresses north of Hyde Park, Lancaster Gate was home to an array of aristocracy, politicians and wealthy individuals. Richard Bethell, 1st Baron Westbury, who was Lord Chancellor in between 1861 and 1865, lived at No.75.
